living without identity

We all are constantly creating our identities in order to know ourselves, to define ourselves, for our own internal ontological and epistemological needs of the self. Krishna says in Geeta "ध्यायतो विष्यान्पुसः संगस्तेसुप्जायते " .... by looking at something outside we develop a yearning for it....why? it helps us define ourselves in a more convenient way, is my interpretation. We are 'handsome' for there is something called 'ugly', we are 'males' for there is someone 'female', we are 'intelligent' for there is someone 'dumb' and so on....we are constantly creating boundaries of our selves. We want to know ourselves and one way is to constantly define ourselves.

This effort also consumes energy and is a source of constant disappointment for all our definitions are forever changing. Our existence is dynamically defined but our intellect seeks a permanent identity. Something that we can hold on to. We are 'sons', 'friends', 'citizens', 'Lovers', 'tax payers', 'nuisance creators', 'fathers', and so on... the definitions are changing every moment but we have a need to have a solid and reliable definition which is likable in our own vision... say for instance we want to be a 'lover' but may be we do not want to be 'a tax payer' or a 'father'. These reluctance offer resistance to the dynamicity of the otherwise fluid and fuzzy creation.

Can we live without identities? not bothering about who I am but doing what the time demands! Like a saint. You ask him who he is and he has no fixed answer to it. You ask Hanuman and he says he is a servant of lord 'Ram' ... he is choosing to define himself with respect to something constant! Well that would be difficult for all! Hare krishna !
